Accent Reduction
What is accent reduction?
We all have language patterns, pronunciations and accents that reflect our individual
backgrounds and experiences. These patterns form part of our identity. It is not necessary
or even desirable to completely substitute one accent for another. These patterns and pronunciations
become a problem if they impair basic communication in certain situations. Our goal is to help provide
the modification necessary so that your speech is clear and professional for your intended audiences.
Do I need help with my accent?
Do people in my environment request frequent repetitions? Do friends and colleagues ask me to
re-explain what I have just said i? Do I have trouble pronouncing certain sounds; or trouble with correct
grammar? Do I have simply trouble with vocabulary and idioms? Do I feel that my speech patterns are hindering
my career and/or social goals? If the answer is yes to any of these questions, it is likely that you need
help with your accent. An evaluation to determine your specific problems can be performed by a
speech-language pathologist.
What will be done in therapy?
In therapy, you will be taught how to produce English sounds corretly using correct intonation.
Attention will be given to common phrases and work-related vocabulary. The therapy will be geared
toward achieving your desired speech goals.
Is it possible to completely lose my accent?
It is unlikely that you will completely lose all traces of your accent. A typical goal of therapy
is to make communication easier for you in social and work-related settings.
