The faculty of the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, at the University of Florida, engage in both research and clinical application. The University of FloridaSpeech and Hearing Clinic is a teaching facility.
The Dyslexia Clinic provides opportunities for graduate students, under the direct supervision of faculty, to diagnose and treat children and adults with dyslexia, and other language learning deficits. Researchers and clinicians provide the best comprehensive, scientifically-based assessment and treatment approaches for persons who have dyslexia and language learning disabilities.
Clients are scheduled during fall, spring, and summer semesters. Space is limited due to teaching schedules and parking availability.
HOW can I find out whether my child is dyslexic or has a language-learning deficit?
Request an evaluation. The evaluation may include verbal and nonverbal aptitude, reading accuracy and rate, spelling, phonological awareness, phonological memory, rapid naming and other skills related to reading and writing ability.
From who should I request an evaluation?
1. Obtain an evaluation from a certified speech-language pathologist who specializes in written language disorders.
2. Obtain an evaluation from an educational or clinical psychologist who specializes in written language disorders.

When should I seek an evaluation for my child who is struggling with writing and spelling?
When a problem is first suspected an evaluation is appropriate. Parents, teachers, family members, and experts, may not agree on the need and timing of an evaluation. An evaluation can help determine if specific instructional strategies are needed.
What kind of therapy is effective for children who have dyslexia?
Research shows that a multisensory, phonological therapy approach is the most effective way to facilitate learning to read and spell.
Children who are identified with dyslexia and who receive phonological therapy before the 2nd grade, have significantly fewer problems learning to read at grade level than children who are identified in later grades.
