Professional Leadership Award Goes to UF AU.D. Graduate

Dr. Patricia Castellanos de Muņoz, a May 2007 UF Au.D. graduate, was awarded the Audiology Foundation of America's Professional Leadership Award. The award is given to an audiologist who demonstrates a positive attitude and strong work ethic, believes in public service to the community, and serves as a role model for others in the profession.
Paty joined UF's Au.D. program from Guatemala, where she serves as one of the few cochlear implant experts in Central America. Paty excelled in the Au.D. program, despite the linguistic, geographical and technical challenges. She has also been awarded the 2007 International Student Award from the College of Public Health and Health Professions.
Committed to humanitarian audiology, Paty has organized the McDia Feliz por el Niņo Sordo, through which organization she has obtained almost $300,000 in funding to fit over 600 children with new digital hearing aids free of charge and continues to insure these children receive quality follow-up care. Paty recently presented at the American Academy of Audiology convention on humanitarian audiology.
In addition to her every day work in private practice, Paty also provides electrophysiologic testing at a local hospital, collaborates with otologists, and consults for an international charitable foundation to audit schools for the deaf. She also promotes audiology awareness through an annual series of parent workshops that serve to educate parents of hearing impaired children.
